You may have a certain set of assumptions or associations pop into your head when you hear (or read) the word “existential.”
Perhaps you think of doomsday movies or books where everyone dies.
Maybe you recall philosophers you read about in high school or college – the ones who, based on the portraits accompanying the relevant passages in your textbook, seemed to be in some sort of competition for the most morose expression.
You might think of moody teenagers who wear black and listen to the sort of music that practically oozes with angst and screams identity crisis.
While these may be manifestations of a preoccupation with existentialist themes or a novice philosopher’s take on existentialism, they certainly don’t make up a representative snapshot of what existential theory truly is. The average existentialist is neither constantly depressed or obsessed with death!
Read on to learn about what existentialism really is, and about a type of therapy that was developed based on this interesting philosophy.

Wowwwwww… you explain in a very easy manner. I love it. I read this article 4 time in a row
I would love to be involved in your therapy. I’ve continued to live in perpetual despair, and I’d like to know how to start living my life again as a person I and others can stand. Not here to debate, but ask for help.
Hi Josh,
I’m sorry to read that you’ve been struggling, but good on you for persisting and being proactive about your recovery.
I’ll note that this comment section is no substitute for the support of a professional therapist who is trained in the appropriate methods to support you. You can find a directory of licensed therapists here (and note that you can change the country setting in the top-right corner).
For resources you can work through on your own (or with some support), I’d suggest taking a look at this article, which is about different Existential Therapy Techniques, and seeing whether the exercises listed may be of use to you.
I hope this helps and all the best for your recovery — don’t give up!

The article was a bit stiff and standard. My expectations were leaning more towards what is mankind’s purpose for existing.
Existential psychology aims to address the fundamental lonliness of that and the resulting anxiety. The article did not dig deeply into modern research of how these issues are addressed.
Hello, I’m curious – Why did you omit Emmy van Deurzan? Where is Viktor Frankl? What about the work of the European existentialist philosophers from which this paradigm developed? Existentialist therapy is a uniquely *philosophical* approach to the human condition, not a psychological one, so this needs attention.
If you are going to restrict your article to male, American existentialist therapists, that is reasonable – existentialist therapy is a large topic – but you could perhaps indicate in your post that you will do that. There is a whole big beautiful world beyond your shores, you know.
Hi Rowena,
Thanks for sharing your feedback, and we’ll keep this in mind as we continue to update and improve our articles as we do aim to provide a balanced account with a range of perspectives from different countries 🙂 In the interim, you might be interested in our dedicated article on Viktor Frankl’s work here.

I completely agree. Especially about “Male and American” I understand this is an American site but American Psychology has its own biases especially with regards to “neuroscience, reductionism and nice pictures of brains. What about Phenomenology, Heidegger, Merleau Ponty, and Satre.
Also what about Constructivism and meaning. Where is George Kelly and his brilliant Personal Construct Psychology a great Meta Theory encompassing Individual meaning-making at its heart ( and yes he was male and American!! )
Hello…
My name is Margaret. I definitely concur with many aspects that are raised in Existential Therapy. Since I am a Christian, I believe that I have to look without, to God, t o provide me meaning and purpose to life. Even so, I believe that I have to work with Him to understand the givens of life which include meaninglessness and purpose in life, dealing with death, isolation and grappling with the aspect of responsibility and freedom. I actually appreciate the fact that this approach realises that these aspects are necessary to live a meaningful and purposeful life. I believe that if we focus on long term solutions just as existential therapy does, we shall cut down life’s problems in half. I also love the philosophical perspective and experiential approach that this therapy embraces. I love the fact that it does not have a specific technique to use, perse, but that it is open different interventions depending on the client’s needs. I look forward to learning and growing more in this area.
Courtney, You have identified some key features of existential psychotherapy, but you have conducted a very surface analysis. There are at least two branches of Existential psychotherapy – a Jean Paul Sartre influenced branch which posits that life meaning must be created, and a branch popularized by Viktor Frankl (Logotherapy) that holds that meaning is latent and is discovered, rather than “created”.
Your resources are almost all other peoples summaries, rather than researching the original authors. You have also attributed ideas inaccurately (the essential existential fears you cite were enumerated by Irvin Yalom in his book Existential Psychotherapy (1980).
